Marine waters

The Baltic Sea region includes the marine waters of the following eight EU Member States: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden. Together, the marine waters of the EU Member States cover about 93.5% of the marine region. The remaining area of this marine region comprises the waters of the following non-EU states: Russian Federation.

The following map illustrates the marine waters of the EU Member States in the region, based on data reported by each Member State. Areas in red indicate areas of overlap in the data reported. The map does not show possible overlaps in waters claimed by non-EU states.

The table below provides the areal extent (km2) and the proportion (%) of the marine region taken by each Baltic Sea Member State. The largest share of the marine region belongs to Sweden (36.06%), followed by Finland (20.64%) and Denmark (7.17%). Lithuania's marine waters make up the smallest proportion of the region (1.64%). None of the Member States in this region has marine waters extending beyond their EEZ borders, as the enclosed nature of this region limits the extent of marine waters to median lines between neighbouring states.
