See all EU institutions and bodiesThe quality of groundwater is linked to the type of rock and soil in aquifers through which water flows. Different geological formations can influence the chemical composition of groundwater and how easily it can be accessed. Porous aquifers contain spaces that store more water and allow it to flow. Fractured aquifers have less permeability, while fissured aquifers are typically least permeable. Productivity shows the ability of the aquifer to sustain a flow of groundwater.
Chemical status by geological formation
This chart shows the area (km2) of groundwater bodies in good, unknown and failing to achieve good chemical status, by geological formation (porous, fissured, and fractured aquifers) and aquifer productivity. It is possible to filter by 1st, 2nd or 3rd RBMP.
