Between 7 and 30 animals of the stranded animals in Belgium probably died due to bycatch in the period 2011-2016. Mortality rate of harbour porpoises due to bycatch estimated by OSPAR (2017) between 0.36 and 0.58% of population (based on part of the fleet).

It is not possible to check from the available data whether the current environmental goal is being achieved (less than 1.7% anthropogenic mortality per year within the population). Between 2007 and 2016, 38% (143 animals) of the stranded porpoises for which a cause of death could be determined, were certain or suspected to have been caught.
