De kenmerken van en hoeveelheden zwerfvuil op zee veroorzaken geen schade aan het kust- en mariene milieu.
Het aantal zwerfvuilitems op de kustlijn is minder dan 20 items/100m (EU-streefwaarde). Een item van strandvuil wordt gedefinieerd als elk weggegooid voorwerp gevonden op het strand dat langer is dan 2,5 centimeter.
De concentraties van micro-zwerfvuil in de bovenste laag van de waterkolom en in zeebodemsediment liggen op niveaus die geen schade veroorzaken aan het kust- en mariene milieu.
De maag van minder dan 10% van de Noordse stormvogels (Fulmarus glacialis) bevat meer dan 0,1 g plastic.
