Description |
The main cause of oil pollution is maritime transport, either by accidental spills or intentional release. Despite the increase in maritime transport, a significant decrease in the number of detected illegal oil discharges per year is observed in the Belgian zone of responsibility (from ca. 50 discharges in the 1990s to about 25 since 2000).
For the six-year reporting cycle: 6*25 = 150 oil discharges |
The total volume of illegal oil spills has also fallen drastically. |
