Description criteria |
Specimens of two species of sea turtles (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas) died as bycatch during the assessment period. More common bycatch specimens were the loggerhead sea turtle Caretta caretta. All reported incidents were related to the small-scale fisheries (PG-GTR, PG-LLS) while no reports were related to pelagic longliners (LLD) or bottom trawlers (OTB), even though the latter were very well monitored.
Based on the methodology described in the text, Criterion D1C1 cannot be determined marine turtles at the moment, due to the absence of set TVs. |
Assessment was conducted also on the element level (see text report). |
Evaluation was not considered an assessment due to the lack of TV (see text report). |
DFMR in collaboration with the national marine turtle experts, are in the process of running meta-data analyses to re-define the population FRV that will be reported under the Habitats Directive, thus Criterion D1C1 is considered not assessed. It is noted that breeding females will be the indicator for the population of marine turtles. The previous FRVs for the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) was 800 breeding females. |
The range and habitat of the species are considered to be in Favourable Status as it was previously assessed under the EU Habitats Directive. Thus, Criterion D1C4 for both species of marine turtles, Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, is considered to be in GES |
The FRV for the marine turtles’ habitat is recorded as “Sufficient” under the last reporting of the Directive 92/43/ECC, thus Criterion D1C5 for both species of marine turtles, Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, is considered to be in GES ( |

It is noted that breeding females will be the indicator for the population of marine turtles. The previous FRVs for the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) 200 breeding females. |
