GES description
The marine environment of Cyprus is considered to be in good environmental status by the year 2020 if human-induced eutrophication is minimised, especially adverse effects thereof, such as losses in biodiversity, ecosystem degradation, harmful algae blooms and oxygen deficiency in bottom waters..
Nutrient concentrations [Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN), Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus (DIP) are not at levels that indicate adverse eutrophication effects.
Chlorophyll a [in water] concentrations are not at levels that indicate adverse effects of nutrient enrichment.
Oxygen concentrations in coastal waters of Cyprus are high overall. Reference station data were available for years 2016 and 2017 and the target value evaluated for those years indicates that Cyprus waters are in GES with respect to oxygen and this criterion was assigned a value of 1.
The abundance of opportunistic macroalgae is not at levels that indicate adverse effects of nutrient enrichment.
The species composition and relative abundance or depth distribution of macrophyte communities achieve values that indicate there is no adverse effect due to nutrient enrichment including via a decrease in water transparency, in coastal waters, the values set in accordance with Directive 2000/60/EC
The species composition and relative abundance of macrofaunal communities, achieve values that indicate that there is no adverse effect due to nutrient and organic enrichment

Justification for non-use of criterion
The GES is to be removed as it refers to the Descriptor Level instead of Criteria
The GES is to be removed as it is replaced by the D5C8
Justification for delay in setting EU/regional requirements
