HELCOM State of the Baltic Sea Report
|
In the context of Baltic International Trawl Survey (BITS, Thünen Institute), "by-caught" waste found on the seabed is recorded. Between 2012 and 2015, 200 pieces of litter were found in 289 demersal trawl nets in the German EEZ and within the 12 sm-zone (natural products not taken into account). The main categories of litter found were plastics (42.0 %, mainly plastic bags) and glass/ceramics(27.5 %, mainly glass bottles).

Methods are being tested within R&D projects.

Description criteria |
Results give first insights into the extent of the pressure. However, they have been obtained using very different methods which still require standardisation. There is still too little comparable information on the quantities and characteristics of micro-litter in the German Baltic Sea. It is therefore not possible to draw conclusions on the status of the German Baltic waters for criterion D10C2.

The secondary criterion D10C3 is not yet adequately covered by established long-term monitoring systems in the German Baltic Sea waters. There are currently no regional indicators.
