Member state marine waters
DK: Marine waters including the seabed and subsoil are defined as the marine area from the landward boundary, delimited by the mean daily water level, to the border of the EEZ. Danish waters include a disputed and unresolved area with Poland along the southeastern border of the EEZ surrounding the Danish island of Bornholm.
Region / subregion description
'The boundary between the two marine regions: The North-east Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea occurs within Danish marine waters. The border is defined in agreement with Sweden and is delineated by the Gniben Point-Hasenor Head transect, it includes the two fjords, Isefjorden and Roskilde Fjord, that are hydrologically connected to Kattegat and is delineated in Øresund by the biogeographical boundary at the Drogden Sill. The boundary delineation follows the fixed link connection (tunnel and bridge) between DK and SE. In the Copenhagen harbour the delineation follows the harbour dam and lock that form a biogeographical boundary. (The boundary between the two marine regions is, in the south-western part of Kattegat, equivalent to the OSPAR border whereas the boundary at the Drogden Sill, the Copenhagen harbour and the inclusion of the Issefjord and Roskilde Fjord has been defined for the MSFD based on biogeographical and hydrological considerations).

Art. 8 nature of coordination
The regional coordination has been carried out via HELCOM. DK has participated in a number of working groups and projects that have been dedicated to securing common approaches to assessing the marine environment. Central projects are the development and use of 1st generation of common assessment tools for eutrophication, HEAT, hasardous substances, CHASE, and biodiversity, BEAT. As well as the Baltic Sea Impact Index and the holistic assessment of the status of the Baltic Sea, HOLAS. The tools were developed to assess the Baltic Sea Action Plan., The regional coordination has been carried out via OSPAR. Art. 8 regional coherence problems
The developed tools are new and not yet fully integrated into the Danish marine administration. The tools have been developed in the HARMONY project covering the eastern part of the Northsea, Skagerrak and Kattegat. The HARMONY tools are based on HELCOM HOLAS tools, developed to assess the Baltic Sea Action Plan, but have been altered to fit the requirements of the MSFD. Full use of the tools are expected to take place for the 2018 assessment. Neighbouring countries to DK (SE and DE) have not developed their marine strategies parallel in time and this has reduced the possible added value of close bi/trilateral coordination., The developed tools are new and not yet fully integrated into the Danish marine administration. The tools have, furthermore, been developed to assess the Baltic Sea Action Plan and therefore operate with a slightly different set of indicators than the next generation of tools, that have only been used in the Danish North Sea subregion (ANS). Full use of the tools are therefore first expected to take place for the 2018 assessment. Targets and indicators suggested in OSPAR products have been consulted and considered closely and followed where relevant. The marine conditions in the Kattegat are different (more brackish) compared to the more salty waters of the North Sea and Skagerrak and a number of targets and indicators have therefore not been followed. There are still a number of areas where targets and indicators need to be developed. The work on common sets of targets and indicators in OSPAR, in various North Sea projects and bi/trilaterally with SE and DE, will continue in the period towards 2018., The coreset targets and indicators have been consulted and considered closely and followed where relevant. The marine conditions in the Danish parts of the Baltic Sea are different (more saline) to the more brackish waters of the Baltic proper and a number of targets and indicators have therefore not been followed.
