Relevant monitoring on litter is already taking place. Experiences and data will be analysed to set up a programme covering seabed, water column and biota. Focus will be on state to be able to determine if litter-levels are reduced.

Q5f - Description of programme for GES assessment
In addition to ongoing activities on collecting and analyzing marine litter, a marine litter programme will be established aiming at - registrating litter along 4 coastal stretches at the North Sea/Skagerrak, Kattegat and (in the Baltic Sea). - analysis of microplastics in several marine areas - macro and microplastiks in fish stomachs - data that may eventually be used for modelcalculations of distribution of marine litter

Baltic International Trawl Survey (BITS)
On the standard survey conducted with DTU Aqua’s scientific vessel “Havfisken” a sample of where approx. 100 marine fish were studied in relation to ingestion of microlitter, defined as litter smaller than 5 mm. The fish were caught on a trawl the 21-22 of November in the northern part of the Great Belt in Denmark. The study focused only on litter in the 0,5-5 mm size range. Approx. 30 % of examined herring and whiting from the Great Belt (Denmark) had ingested microlitter, most of which consisted of 0,5-4 mm fibres. The species investigated were whitting and herring to cover both the demerasal living fish and the pelagic.
