Q4f - Programme description
Noise is primerely monitored and assessed in specifik activities/projects (EIA processes). Appropriate mitigation measures are implemented. BIAS and BIAS+ projects will establish and implement standards and tools for the management of underwater noise in accordance with MSFD in the marine region of the Baltic Sea. The BIAS standards and tools will match the needs for management of underwater noise in accordance with the MSFD, be harmonised across the Baltic Sea region, and be valuable for future activities after the end of the project (link)

Q9c - Monitoring method
BIAS-project will provide framework for a database and reporting structure which can summarize activities geographically and temporally. Reports of activities to be included should be submitted by relevant authories/agencies, but this part has not been agreed upon. Activities to include has not been decided and spatial and temporal resolution of reporting has not been decided.
According to standards developed within the EU-LIFE project BIAS. Underwater noise is monitored by recordings from fixed recording stations on the seabed. Two types of stations are used. Type I are placed close to sound sources (shipping lanes) and records source parameters. Type 2 stations are placed far from sound sources and serve to develop tranmission loss models. Based on source parameters, information about source activity (AIS data and VMS data) and transmission loss models the noise recordings are extended by modelling to cover the entire projact area.
