The assessment of the condition of the Danish fjords and coastal waters reflects national assessments under the Water Framework Directive. That is, in relation to eutrophication in coastal waters (within 1 nautical mile from the baseline), good environmental status corresponding to good ecological status is determined based on a number of quality elements according to the Water Framework Directive. In the Danish watershed plans, 119 coastal water areas (within 1 nautical mile) have been defined in four water districts. Overall, the state of the water areas is assessed on the basis of the indicators (quality elements) chlorophyll, eelgrass and bottom fauna. The indicators are monitored in the national monitoring program. When the watershed plans were published in 2016, two coastal watersheds had target fulfillment. Implementation of efforts under the Danish watershed plans is expected to have a positive impact on the condition in all open Danish marine areas.
