Κύριοι στόχοι είναι η διατήρηση ορισμένων εμπορικά εκμεταλλεύσιμων ειδών εντός ασφαλών βιολογικών ορίων και η εξασφάλιση επαρκούς διαχείρισης των αποθεμάτων τους. Επιπλέον, καταβάλλεται προσπάθεια για την απόκτηση βασικών πληροφοριών μέσω της παρακολούθησης μεγαλύτερου αριθμού εμπορικά σημαντικών αποθεμάτων, τα οποία δεν υπήρξαν μέρος κάποιου προγράμματος παρακολούθησης στο παρελθόν, με σκοπό τη βελτίωση των γνώσεων μας σχετικά με την κατάστασή τους.
