Description parameter
There are several data gaps, but there is widespread evidence of regular bycatch in small-scale fisheries, mainly by set-nets. Only with the birds reported by a few collabotrative fishermen in Galicia, the average number per year is above the threshold, although the real figure must be substantially higher.
Historical data allowing comparisons is only available for the National Park of Islas Atlánticas (PNIA), to which the figures provided correspond. Other areas have been monitored more sporadically, with increasing effort during this cycle, or historical data has not been available.
The best monitores colonies are those of West Galicia, which correspond to the bulk of the species in the region, and which shows the lowest values of breeding success. These have been averaged with values from other colonies, in apparently better condition, resulting 1.22. This value is just two hundredths above the reproductive success threshold established for the species (1.20); this, combined with the fact that the PNMTIAG colonies (which concentrate more than half of the DMNOR breeding population) show values well below the threshold, has led to the conclusion that the criterion does not meet the BEA for the subspecies.
There is no information available to assess D1C3 for survival rate
Not assessed. The species tends to breed scattered across long coastal stetches, making particularly difficult to define colonies and hence to use the number and distribution of colonies to assess D1C4.
Not assessed
There is some evidence of bycatch, but the evidence is too sparse as to make a proper assessment. On the other hand, the reference value would change substantially if only the breeding population is considered, or foraging/migrating birds visiting from other areas are also taken into account (the local breeding population is relatively new and small, but the species is common at sea).
The species colonised the region within the last two decades, and has shown an increasing trend, with abundance during this period above the threshold in the three breeding colonies/areas known.
Data available is limited, but shows values above the threshold (2 colonies monitored)
No data available on adult survival
Only three colonies known in the region (on of them with different sub-colonies), all of them occupied during the current cycle.
Not assessed
No evidence of bycatch. Given the ecology of the species, it is not expected to be a problem, at least on a regular basis
No data available for the current period of evaluation. Prospections starting in 2021 will provide better information for future evaluations.
No demographic information available for this evaluation period
No demographic information available for this evaluation period
No proper monitoring across the region to properly evaluate this criterion, although there is no evidence of any colony disappearing in recent times
Not assessed
Despite the lack of official data in Spain, the species is known to be prone to bycatch, largely in small-scale fisheries, which are not covered by observer programmes. Data from the neighbouring countries (France and Portugal) points to significant bycatch, hence supporting this evaluation. Reference values have been taken considering the global population, although it is likely that these numbers should be lower, adapted to the population visiting the region.
No breeding population in the region. For now there has been no attempts to assess trends in abundance at sea.
No breeding population in the region.
No breeding population in the region.
No breeding population in the region. For now there has been no attempts to assessdistribution range changes at sea.
Not assessed
The species is prone to fisheries bycatch, so it merits attention, although no data were available for the evaluation period. Since this may be due to the scarcity of data, the result is left as unknown.
The species has bred for the last time in the region in 2017, and is now considered extinct, so the evaluation is not good. The status in 2nd cycle was already """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""not good"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""", but the trend is """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""deteriorating"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""", as the nesting pairs have dissapeared.
No demographic information available for this evaluation period
No demographic information available for this evaluation period
At the beginning of the evaluation period there was only one colony left out of 2, and this also disappeared after 2017, so the species became locally extinct during the current cycle. The status in 2ndcycle was already """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""not good"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""", but the trend is """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""deteriorating"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""", as the nesting pairs have dissapeared.
Despite the lack of official data in Spain, the species is known to be prone to bycatch, largely in set nets, being one of the most reported species across it's range. Particular attention merits the small-scale fisheries, which are not covered by observer programmes. Data from the neighbouring countries (France and Portugal) points to significant bycatch of this species, hence supporting this evaluation. Reference values, on the other hand, require a proper assessment of the wintering population in the region, now that there is no breeding population anymore.
The species has bred for the last time in the region in 2015, and is now considered extinct, so the evaluation is not good.
No breeding population within the current evaluation period
No breeding population within the current evaluation period
No colonies left, out of 9 known historically.
No evidence of bycatch. Given the ecology of the species, it is not expected to be a relevant problem, although there might be occasional captures, most probably with recreational fisheries, and the issue deserves attention in the future.
The unique colony of the species in the region is small but increasing
Breeding success values above the threshold
There is no information available to assess D1C3 for survival rate
Very nomadic species. However, for the region there is only one colony hand has remained stable.

Description parameter
No data available for the region, although the species is prone to bycatch, and captures have been reported in ICES area 27.9.a, that includes all DMSUD. For now it has been left as unknown, but future efforts should be directed to assess bycatch of this and other seabird species in the region.
No breeding population in the region. For now there has been no attempts to assess trends in abundance at sea.
No breeding population in the region.
No breeding population in the region.
No breeding population in the region. For now there has been no attempts to assessdistribution range changes at sea.
Not assessed
No evidence of bycatch. Given the ecology of the species, it is not expected to be a relevant problem, although there might be occasional captures.
Severe decrease of the speciesin the last 15 years, with declining trend also across the current evaluation period.
Very low values of productivity in the two monitored colonies
No information on survival rates available for this evaluation period
Very nomadic species, criterion not assessed

Description overall status
In the 2º cycle, this descriptor was not assessed by features as they did not reflect the ecology of the bird species in Spain. Although the situation is the same, it has been decided to follow the requirements of the COM for coherence and comparability amongst MS.
