Description parameter
No evidence of bycatch. Given the ecology of the species, it is not expected to be a problem, at least on a regular basis
Abundance values subject to great uncertainty, and different approaches across time. Hard to set a trend based on total estimates for the archipelago.
Overall values of breeding success above the threshold, but it's important to keep alert as some colonies have introduced predators (cats, rats and others), and further coverage is needed to properly asses this criterion
No data available so far
43 documented colonies, including all documented in the past. Some new colonies are likely the result of increased survey effort, and it might render new ones in the future. However, it's important to keep track of all known colonies to ensure that none disapears.
Not assessed
Although there is indirect evidence of occasional bycatch, there is not enought information as to make a proper asessment. The ipmact is believed to be low in this region, but efforts should be made to imporve data collection.
Abundance values subject to great uncertainty, and different approaches across time. Hard to set a trend based on total estimates for the archipelago. Rough historical estimate of 30000 breeding pairs. As alternative approach, 3 plots in different colonies were monitored ni 2016-2021 for the first time, and might pose a reference value for the future. Values expressed in this Excel report correspond to these plots, totalling 96 breeding pairs (threshold would equal 80% of that value, i.e. 77 breeding pairs). For the future, it is important to take into account that changes in the number or coverage of monitoring plots will affect the reference value (it would be desirable to increase the number of plots).
Overall values of breeding success above the threshold
No data available so far
The species has a wide distribution in the Canary Islands, in some areas quite sparse, and it's difficult to define breeding colonies adequately. The available information suggests an increase in the breeding range, but it has not been properly documented, so the evaluation of the criterion remains as unknown. It is recommended to avoid this criterion in future evaluations in DMCAN.
Not assessed
No evidence of bycatch. Given the ecology of the species, it is not expected to be a problem, at least on a regular basis
Abundance values subject to great uncertainty, and different approaches across time. However, all evidence points to a decline. Rough estimates of 550-600 breeding pairs at the beginning of the XXI century have been taken as a reference (threshold 460 bp) and compared with the last estimate of about 200 breeding pairs.
The difficult to find active nests has precluded any assessment of demographic parameters
The difficult to find active nests has precluded any assessment of demographic parameters
Despite the lack of extensive monitoring, a colony has been reported to disappear recently, Isolte de Lobos, for which it iss consider that the species does not meet good environmental status for D1C4. In fact there have been a handful of new sites discovered in recent years, but this is believed to be the result of increased prospecting effort, and not to the creation of new colonies. For the future, the current reference is of 12 colonies (totalling 42 sub-colonies) in the whole archipelago.
Not assessed
No evidence of bycatch. Given the ecology of the species, it is not expected to be a problem, at least on a regular basis, but attention should be paid to confirm this premise.
Abundance for the whole DMCAN is subject to important biases, but all evidence points to a severe decline. It has been taken as a reference value the historical estimate of 400 breeding pairs (thrsehold of 320 bp), well above the last estimate of 162 breeding pairs for the whole archipelago.
The difficult to find active nests has precluded any assessment of demographic parameters
The difficult to find active nests has precluded any assessment of demographic parameters
57 documented colonies, including new ones as a result of better prospection. Some historical sites are suspected to have disappered, but further evidence is needed to confirm local extinctions.
