The low risk is due to the monitoring which was improved only in the latter part of the assessment period (MSFD art 11 monitoring programme in 2014).
A worm of the genus Laonome was observed in 2014 and has spread throughout the coast of the Gulf of Finland. A worm species of the same genus was recorded in Estonia in 2012 but because it's not certain if it's another species of not, the species has not yet been included in the HELCOM-indicator.
The species was observed in the Archipelago Sea in 2012, but it was not the first record in the Baltic Sea because the species was already observed in the Estonian territorial waters in 2009.
The small mollusc was found off Hamina city in 2013 but because the determination to species is still in process, it was not yet included in the HELCOM indicator. Due to its small size (< 1mm) it is possible that it has been overlooked in the past. Species is not new in the Baltic.
