Monitoring strategy description
In the Republic of Croatia, activities related to the prevention of marine litter and the management of marine litter are carried out through the application of existing strategic documents and the legal framework related to waste management. Given the different categories of litter in the marine environment, defining the purpose and objectives of the monitoring program for marine litter was preceded by the choice of protocols given that different categories of waste require different approaches in the development of monitoring programs. Until 2017, the Republic of Croatia did not systematically collect and record data from field research related to marine litter. Since mid-2017, the Republic of Croatia has been implementing a systematic model for monitoring all elements of marine litter; beach litter, floating litter, litter on the seabed, and microplastics in the sediment on the beaches, the surface of the sea and in the digestive tract of fish as part of the Monitoring and Observation System for the continuous assessment of the state of the Adriatic Sea (OG 153/14).

Monitoring method other
The selected methodology of sampling, measurement and laboratory data processing depends on the observed indicator or belonging to a particular group of waste, and the specific methodology should follow the monitoring and analysis methods described in: Galgani et al.
