Target description
Maintain current status in water bodies where GES is established in relation to the concentrations of contaminants in relevant matrices. Develop and implement measures to achieve GES in water bodies where GES hasn't been achieved. Achieve and maintain contaminant concentration levels in line with set environmental quality standards or otherwise in line with undisturbed environment. The levels of concentrations of non-synthetic substances that are naturally present in the environment should be in line with their background concentrations, with no deterioration trends. The levels of synthetic substances should be in line with the detection limits of the analytical methods for their determination.

Achieve the levels of biological or ecological contaminant effects lower than the toxicological standards set as threshold values for achieving GES. Maintain the levels of biological or ecological contaminant effects in areas where GES is achieved. In areas characterized by serious pollution levels the levels of biological or ecological contaminant effects need to be lowered by 10% within the next 6 years. New bioindicators and biomarkers need to be developed and validated for testing the status of the marine environment.
Maintain the current state of no significant acute pollution events within coastal and territorial waters.
