Description parameter
The number of newly introduced species was based on NIS presence data collected through dedicated monitoring in hot spot areas for introductions during the first MSFD cycle. No real trend is mesurable since both sampling methodology and sampling effort were employed for the first time as such.

Description overall status
Italy adopts the criterion D2C1 of new Decision to evaluate the GES for descriptor 2. However, since the Italian marine waters are characterized by important Atlantic and Lessepsian species migrations, the evaluation of GES will be based solely on newly introduced NIS recorded in areas affected by main introduction vectors, such as shipping and aquaculture. According to data obtained by monitoring campaings, the Adriatic unit harbours the highest number of new introductions, represented by 9 species of phytoplankton and 5 species of benthos.
