Target assessment description
Litter on the Lithuanian Baltic Sea coast (BAL-LT-AA-04) (excluding micro-litters) was monitored on ten beaches. The observations identified all the beach litter contained in the 100 m study broadcast and assessed the different objects of the shore-side litter. Observations show that artificial polymer materials: Plastic fragments (41.8), cigarette extinction (13.9), plastic ropes/valves (5.7) are the most commonly accepted objects on the Lithuanian Baltic Sea coast. Looking at the annual amount of shore-side litter in the period 2012-2017, there is a downward trend in the overall amount of litter. The GES value was not achieved in any of the study sites (0 %) and in 2017, 120 pieces of litter were found in 100.
The data of the Baltic Sea bottom trawls (during the research period (2013-2017) 47 times in Lithuanian marine waters, BAL-LT-AA-03) showed that at least one litter polluting the marine environment was detected during 36 trawls (76.5% of all) , In 2017, 235 units / km2 of garbage were found on the seabed.
