GES description |
The composition, amount and spatial distribution of litter on the coastline, in the surface layer of the water column, and on the seabed, are at levels that do not cause harm to the coastal and marine environment.
The status is measured by indicators:
1) Average annual coastal litter (applicable to: BAL-LT-AA-04).
2) Average annual marine litter (applicable to: BAL-LT-AA-03).

Justification for non-use of criterion |
Another primary indicator for the D10 descriptor is D10C2. At regional level, indicators are not developed for criterion D10C2. During the reporting period, studies on micro-litter were carried out in the waters and sediments of the Baltic Sea, the Curonian Lagoon, as well as in river water and wastewater systems before and after treatment (see more: https://aaa.lrv.lt/public/canonical/1744888274/3448/Lietuvos%20j%C5%ABros%20rajono%20aplinkos%20b%C5%ABkl%C4%97%202018-2023%20m..pdf). Lithuania has been involved in the state environmental monitoring programme by investigating micro-litter in water and sediment. There is a lack of data at this stage to develop an indicator and establish GES values, in the absence of a regional assessment. Criterion D10C3 is secondary. In line with the HELCOM monitoring recommendation https://helcom.fi/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Guidelines-on-monitoring-of-microlitter-in-biota-in-the-Baltic-Sea-for-bivalves.pdf, Lithuania plans to launch studies on micro-litter in molluscs.
