Method used
The BAL-LV environmental objective to achieve or maintain GES is defined in accordance with the desired environmental status as defined by good environmental status descriptors. Consequently, the desired objectives for the marine environment were defined on the basis of qualitative characteristics in accordance with Commission Decision 2010/477 / EU and related indicators with quantitative values. The quantitative values of the indicators were determined using trend analysis and historical data. The Marine Environment Initial Assessment Report Technical Annex “Good Environmental Status Criteria, Indicators and Assessment for the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea” provides an explanation of the methods for quantifying the quantified targets for the marine environment.

Description [Targets]
Human-induced eutrophication, in particular its adverse effects, is minimized, such as loss of biodiversity, ecosystem degradation, harmful algae blooms and oxygen depletion in subsoil waters.
GES is achieved when nutrient concentrations in the aquifer correspond to physiographic, geographic and climatic conditions specific to the site and changes in these nutrient concentrations do not result in an adverse direct or indirect increase in nutrients
GES is achieved when nutrient concentrations in the aquifer correspond to physiographic, geographic and climatic conditions specific to the site and changes in these nutrient concentrations do not result in an adverse direct or indirect increase in nutrients
The GES level will be reached if the chlorophyll concentrations correspond to the GES water transparency levels.
GES is achieved when the phytoplankton biomass is outside the levels associated with contaminated conditions.
The BQI index is based on the composition of benthic fauna species (proportion of sensitive and tolerant species), the number of species and the number of individuals in a given species, thus achieving GES when the diversity and abundance of benthic invertebrates is beyond levels associated with contaminated conditions.
GES is achieved when the distribution of macrophytes corresponds to the distribution of vegetation affected by natural fluctuations.
