Description parameter
In the entire assessed area, waste is found on the seabed, especially in the form of plastic. The amounts of waste in the eastern Bay of Biscay, the Southern Celtic Sea and the Channel are greater than in the northern part of the International North Sea and the Celtic Sea.
Measured as plastic in stomachs of Fulmars. The OSPAR common indicator plastics in the stomachs of Northern petrels (Fulmarus glacialis) developed in the Netherlands has been reliably measured since around 1998, and has been extensively published. This indicator serves two purposes: (a) measuring the quantities, geographical distribution and trends of, in particular, floating plastic waste that can be eaten by the petrel, and (b) giving an indication of health damage to petrels. The occurrence of health damage to individual petrels can be regarded as proven on the basis of various scientific publications in a general sense. However, specific dose-effect relationships for plastics in fulmars have not yet been investigated experimentally.
