LFI score below assessment threshold
|
International research shows that the current average maximum length of demersal fish is 78 cm (assessment period 2016-2020), while in the reference period (1983-1985) it averaged 87 cm. |
The typical length of the fish communities (assessment period 2016-2020) in the longest running survey (GNSINtOT1) is approximately 27 cm, while in the reference period (1983-1985) it was approximately 31 cm. |
Since the 1990s, primary production has declined significantly throughout the North Sea, with the exception of the Dogger Bank. Various environmental variables can be linked to the decline in primary production at each location, but in most cases, climate and nutrients appear to play a key role. The decline in the productivity of primary producers is therefore likely related to human-induced pressure. It is not yet possible to assess the current status using this pilot indicator, but the results of this pilot do not indicate that good environmental status has been achieved. |

It is not yet possible to assess the feeding guilds of the fish community against good environmental status, because the GMT for these guilds has not yet been defined. |
The size distribution within the assessed guild in the International North Sea does not meet good environmental status. This outcome is determined by the element of demersal sub-apex predators, where three indicators resulted in a 'not good' assessment. The signs of recovery observed in the previous plan period have not continued and the situation has deteriorated. |

Description overall status |
The composition of phytoplankton, zooplankton and sub-apex demersal predators has changed significantly over an extended period, and these changes are associated with human-induced environmental changes. Therefore, the coastal ecosystem in the international North Sea is not in good environmental condition. |
