Description criteria
In the period 2016-2021, one incident occurred with a volume >5 m3 (the limit value that the Netherlands uses for the concept of 'significantly serious'). At the end of March 2019, EMSA reported to the Dutch Coast Guard that a satellite had observed an oil slick approximately 17 nautical miles off the coast (CleanSeaNet alert report). The Coast Guard confirmed the report with a verification flight, after which the pollution by an oil spill response vessel was cleaned up in five days. No affected birds or other affected organisms were observed during this activity. Nor have any oiled birds washed up on beaches after the incident. It can be assumed that the discharge ultimately had no significant effect on the marine environment. Despite extensive research into the origin of the oil, the cause of the incident has not been determined.
