Description criteria |
Thresholds for anthropogenic impulsive sound levels (D11C1) have not been defined at European Union level.
For this cycle, data on the use of impulse sources in the subdivision of the continent during the period 2012 to 2018 were compiled in accordance with the methodological standards set out in Commission Decision No 2017/848 (in Chapter D.1.12.3 of Part D ? Mainland Portugal). However, since the definition of the assessment methods for this criterion and associated thresholds remains ongoing within the TG Noise group, it is not possible to assess whether this criterion is in good environmental status or not.
|
An assessment of this criterion was not possible in view of the fact that assessment methods are at this stage under development, in particular in the context of the work of TG Noise.
For the assessment of continued noise, the definition of risk areas will be instrumental in measuring the need for mitigation targets and measures, and a specific target has been set for this purpose.
Understanding the effects of noise, both individually and at population level, remains as the main challenge, and to this end, the work to be carried out by TG Noise in the framework of the European Commission?s Common Implementation Strategy for the MSFD remains very relevant.
However, it should be noted that there is no evidence, at the time, that it suggests that current noise levels in the waters of the continental subdivision cause an impact on the population of cetaceans or other noise-sensitive marine animals.

Description overall status |
It has not been possible to assess that the criteria are, at this time, under development (in particular as part of the ongoing work of the TG Noise) and the absence of thresholds set at European Union level.

It has not been possible to assess that the criteria are, at this time, under development (in particular as part of the ongoing work of the TG Noise), the limited existence of data and the absence of thresholds set at European Union level.
