To promote knowledge of marine habitats and biocenesis, in particular those existing in coastal bands, to obtain quantitative and qualitative information to establish an inical state and areas of occurrence (mapped). Establish monitoring programmes to maintain and/or restore coastal habitats.

Study, recast and manage monitoring networks to collect information supporting the characterisation of the marine environment, with the emphasis on situations requiring greater attention to maintain or reach Good Environmental Status and to those that may reveal the causal relationships between monitoring results and human activities.

Establish monitoring programmes for species or functional groups, the proliferation of which indicates a clear change or threat of local trophic networks (ex: Diadema aff antilllarum, species outside marine aquaculture facilities, etc.)

Maintain effective control of the introduction of NIS into protected areas of the subdivision of Madeira.

Reduce the population of the Phorcus sauciatus species on the island of Santa Maria, promoting the exploitation of this invader resource.

Improve monitoring and surveillance for early detection of new NIS introductions, mainly at high-risk identified sites
