Description criteria
We do not have indicators under this criterion yet, One reason is that threshold values shall be established at union level. We will include these thresholds when they are established. We are active in groups discussing this in CIS-MSFD, as well as OSPAR & HELCOM.

Description overall status
A justification for not using criteria D10C2 is included in ART9GES-Schema. We do not have indicators under this criterion yet, because we are waiting for monitoring methods to be established at EU or regional level. So far, microlitter is monitored through different projects, investigations and studies. The following projects are implemented at national level with the aim of testing and evaluating methods for monitoring water and sediment: 1) 2017, the Swedish EPA and SwAM conducted a comparative study where the sampling methods were compared. 2) In 2017, the Swedish EPA and SwAM conducted a gradient study in the Baltic and the North Sea to investigate the quantities and varieties of microlitter found in water and sediment along gradients from the coastline out into the sea and to trace sources and distribution routes. 3) In 2018, the Swedish EPA conducted a study on the westcoast to investigate the quantities and varieties of microlitter found on beaches and in sediments to trace local and long-distance sources and distribution routes.
