Description parameter
Sweden tracks the total amount of plastics, along with separate data for single use plastics (SUP) as well as fishing related plastics (FISH). It is important to note that the total amount of plastics (""""other plastics"""" as Element2) includes both fishing related plastics and single use plastics.

Description overall status
Sweden’s definition of 'good environmental status' (GES) for macro litter focuses solely on the total abundance and not on specific categories of litter. In terms of threshold values, beach litter is considered to be achieved when there are fewer than 20 macro litter items per 100 metres of coastline. For seafloor litter, the threshold value is achieved when the total amount shows a decreasing trend over the assessment period. Thus, we do not have GES definitions for specific litter categories.

We do not have indicators under this criterion yet, as we are currently working to establish regular monitoring of micro plastics in sediments. Monitoring of micro litter at the national level was carried out as a pilot study in 2020, coordinated with the monitoring programme for contaminants in sediments. Micro litter particles in the size range of 100–300 micrometers, from surface sediments (0–2 cm deep) from 16 offshore stations, were analyzed. We are still waiting for the results of study, but preliminary results indicate that the highest concentrations of microplastics were found in the Baltic Proper. Additionally, there is variation in the results both geographically and in relation to sampling depth. Several other projects and studies have been implemented at national level with the aim of testing and evaluating methods for monitoring micro litter in water and sediments (See chapter Marint skräp, pp. 117)
