We have taken into account the principle of the Water Directive, we have determined the reference conditions and divided the values into five bands (in principle as an expert opinion) in the area of the least red area. The boundary for GES is the boundary between good and moderate class.

Description [Targets]
Achieving good and preventing deterioration in terms of pollutant concentrations in water, sediment and organisms. Concentrations of pollutants are in accordance with the prescribed limit values ​​within the Water Framework Directive and the Environmental Standards Directive in the field of water policy (Directive 2000/60 / EC, Directive 2008/105 / EC) or the Regulation on the status of surface waters. No. 14/2009, 98/2010).
For seawater, we use the environmental standards from the Surface Water Status Regulation (URL 14/2009). There are no established environmental standards for sediment. For seawater, limit values ​​are set in the relevant directives and regulations. The criterion for sediments (until the new directive enters into force) would be that synthetic pollutants do not exceed values ​​that can cause irreversible effects on organisms, or. that non-synthetic pollutants do not deviate significantly from natural values ​​in the environment. The criterion can also be a non-increasing trend of pollutant concentrations. For organisms, the limit values ​​in the relevant EU regulations are applicable to GES.
The state of this descriptor is based on knowledge of BC (background concnentrations) and on the criteria for background evaluation (BAC Background Assessment Criteria) and EAC (Environmental Assessment Criteria), a fall below this value means a deterioration in the environment. The basal activities of an individual biomarker are determined for only some biomarkers according to the geographical region.

Mejne vrednosti so odvisne od vrste biomarkerja, najprej določimo BAC vrednost in nato še EAC vrednost. Pri vrednotenju učinkov je merodajna EAC vrednost, ki bodisi ne sme biti presežena ali pa izmerjene vrednosti ne smejo biti pod EAC vrednostjo. EAC je odvisna od BAC vrednosti, ki predstavlja naravno fiziološko vrednost.

Potrebno je vpeljati primeren monitoring , s katerim bomo dobili manjkajoče podatke za tiste biomarkerje, kjer nimamo vrednosti za določitev bazalnih vrednosti ali so le te pomanjkljive in za spremljanje trendov. Predlagamo, da se pripravi ekspertno poročilo na nivoju sub-regije Jadransko morje, ki bo zajemalo podatke o onesnaževalih in izpostavilo tiste najbolj problematične ter podatke o bioloških učinkih onesnaževal.
