Es wird geschätzt, dass sich allein 600.000 m³ Müll auf und im Meeresboden der Nordsee befinden (OSPAR, 1995). Eine Differenzierung des benthischen Mülls wurde 2007 exemplarisch durch das Alfred-Wegener-Institut analog zu den Spülsaumuntersuchungen durchgeführt, was die dort beobachteten Trends bestätigt (Krone, pers. Komm.). (1) Im Zeitraum 2002-2006 fanden sich in den Mägen von entlang der Nordseeküste gesammelten toten Eissturmvögeln im Durchschnitt 32,4 Müllteile pro Individuum mit einem Durchschnittsgewicht von 0,3 Gramm. Zwei von 47 in den Jahren 1998 bis 2006 durch das FTZ-Westküste analysierten Schweinswalen hatten Nylon- und Plastikmaterial im Magen. Von 24 zwischen 1997 bis 2007 untersuchten Seehunden war ein Tier von Plastikabfällen im Magen betroffen. (1) Strände in der OSPAR-Region weisen durchschnittlich eine Belastung von 712 Müllteilen pro 100 Meter Küstenlinie auf (OSPAR, 2010).Während die Müllbelastung aus den Bereichen Fischerei und Aquakultur im Nordostatlantik in den Jahren 2000 bis 2006 stark zugenommen hat, zeigte die Analyse anderer Müllquellen weder Zu- noch Abnahmen. Standardisiertes Spülsaummonitoring wird in der deutschen Nordsee seit 2002 durchgeführt. Dreiviertel der zwischen 2002-2008 in den Spülsäumen gefundenen Müllteile bestanden aus Plastik und/oder Styropor (Fleet et al., 2009) (Abbildung 4.1). Die am häufigsten gefundenen Müllteile mit 30% Anteil an der Gesamtbelastung waren Taue, Leinen und Netze. Weitere 28% bestanden aus verschiedenen Verpackungsmaterialien, Teile aus Plastik unbekannter Herkunft waren mit 16% vertreten.
