Monitoring strategy description |
The Cypriot GES definition for being in good standing for marine litter is as follows:
• Marine litter quantity on beaches and the seabed is minimized and, if practicable, eliminated; and
• Caretta caretta mortality due to entanglement and obstruction from marine litter and subsequent stranding is minimized and, if possible, eliminated. Under the Cypriot program code MALCY-D10 in the geographical area of MAL-CY-MS, pollution from marine litter was recorded on beaches and the seabed and the mortality of marine organisms (i.e. Caretta caretta) from marine litter was also recorded. Under this program code the following sub programs are implemented. Sub program MALCY-D10-01 is conducted seasonally on Makronisos beach, Faros Pafos beach, Governor’s beach, Larnaka Airport beach, Polis-Gialia beach and Lara beach. The monitoring program followed the MSFD criteria and indicators of characterizing the litter in the marine and coastal environment as of J R C S C I E N T I F I C A N D P O L I C Y R E P O R T S, Report EUR 26113 EN, MSFD Technical Subgroup on Marine Litter, Guidance on Monitoring of Marine Litter in European Seas MSFD Technical Subgroup on Marine Litter, 2013; and the UNEP/MAP (2013) criteria and indicators observing the trends in the amount of litter washed ashore and/or deposited on coastlines including analysis of its composition, spatial distribution, and if possible the source. Sub program MALCY-D10-02 is conducted yearly at the MEDITS sampling stations. At each sampling station all marine waste is recorded. The monitoring program followed the MSFD criteria and indicators of litter characterization in the marine and coastal environment; MED CAM 2014b agreement criteria and indicators include observing the trends in the amount of litter in the water column (including floating at the surface) and deposited on the seafloor including the analysis of its composition, spatial distribution, and if possible the source; UNEP/MAP (2013) criteria and indicators are observing the trends in amount of litter in the water column including micro-plastics and on the seafloor. In addition to the data presented in the December 2019 GES Report, the MEDITS 2019 data was provided. In 2019, marine litter was found from 50 to 800 m water depths with the highest concentration between the 500 to 800 m depth zone (31.84 kg). The southern portion of Cyprus; specifically, from stations within the Larnaka Gulf, Agia Napa marine area, and close to Pafos, had the main concent |

Coverage of GES criteria |
Adequate monitoring will be in place by 2024 |
||
Gaps and plans |
The primary reason that Program D10 – Marine Litter has a GES classification of partially covered is because two out of the three sub programs are inactive (i.e. MALCY-D10-01, MALCY-D10-03) and one is partially active (i.e. MALCY-D10-02). In order to achieve GES for Program D10 – Marine Litter new protocols established by MSFD and IMAP of UNEP/MAP will be implicated and followed. Till now beach litter monitoring, as well as seabed monitoring has been implemented. Microlitter in beach and seabed, floating microlitter, as well as marine litter in biota are going to be implemented and be adequate until 2024. |
