Description criteria |
Regarding the presence of micro-litter on the beach, on the water surface and in sediment, first surveys in the Wadden Sea show that microplastics are found in all compartments (Wattenmeer QSR 2017). However, further investigations have to be carried out to quantify and broaden these results, meaning that at this stage an assessment cannot be carried out.

Description overall status |
The primary criterion D10C2 is currently not sufficiently covered and a regional indicator is missing.
|
The second secondary criterion D10C4 is not yet adequately recorded through an established long term monitoring effort in the German North Sea. The number of individuals that are negatively affected by getting caught in litter (entanglement and strangulation) will be first of all determined for the German North Sea coast via the number of birds caught in litter in breeding colonies. At present, there are no regional assessment procedures that can be used. In 2014 and 2015, first surveys were carried out in Helgoland to determine the rate of entanglement of breeding bird species. The rate of entanglement of gannets was 2% for adult individuals and 3.5 % for juveniles. Mortality was therefore estimated to account for one quarter of total mortality. Mortality during the breeding season is two to five times higher than the natural mortality rate. GES is unlikely to be achieved for this aspect.
