Description criteria
The HELCOM-developed indicator (Cumulative Impact on benthic biotopes) for the criteria D6C1, D6C2, D6C3 could not be used due to a lack of regionally agreed thresholds. In addition, the Baltic Sea Impact Index (BSII) developed descriptively by HELCOM and used descriptively for criterion D6C3 takes into account both the physical loss (criterion D6C1) and the physical disturbance (criterion D6C2), as provided for in Commission Decision 2017/848 / EU.
For the distribution and extension of the benthic habitat (criterion D6C4), for which the results of the evaluation of criterion D6C1 are also to be used, there is currently no applicable indicator available.
The status assessments of the relevant widespread benthic habitats were carried out separately for the individual territorial units (water bodies according to WFD, HELCOM basins outside the 1 nm zone, HD habitat type). These individual results based on existing assessment procedures were then aggregated for each of these habitats. Their respective area is in good condition within the spatial intersection of these territorial units if all the individual results available for them have reached their threshold values. If at least 50% of the occurrence area of a widespread benthic habitat was assessed in this way and if the good status is not found in less than 25% of this assessed area, then it is overall in a good status according to criterion D6C5.
