Q4e - Programme ID | MADHR-D10 |

Q4f - Programme description | Due to the lack of systematic studies and monitoring programs of marine litter in "Initial assessment of the situation and load the Croatian part of the Adriatic" this descriptor has not been previously processed. Current activities related to the marine litter issue are generally limited to occasional analysis of floating and beach stranded litter (Kwokal and Stefanovic, 2009, 2010; Petriciolli and Bakran-Petriciolli, 2012), which usually accumulates in the southern coastal areas as the result of southerly winds and sea currents where litter is transferred over long distances. In recent years in Republic of Croatia there are recorded cases of excessive pollution of the sea by floating litter, especially in the southern Adriatic (Dubrovnik-Neretva county), for which is assumed the cross-border origin. |

Q5f - Description of programme for GES assessment | Although the problem of marine litter is present for a long time, our knowledge is still quite scarce. The main disadvantages of this descriptor is the lack of data base on quantity, composition and trends of marine litter, poor understanding of oceanographic and climatic processes that affect the distribution and retention in the marine environment, and further knowledge of the fate of marine waste when gets into the sea (disintegration time, sinking, etc.). Since the knowledge of the state, quantities and properties and litter impacts on the marine environment at the current level are insufficient, it was not possible to determine the current status and trends of this descriptor in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea. |

Q6d - Description of programme for targets assessment | Activities related to the prevention of marine litter are carried out through the application of the existing legal framework and strategic documents related to waste management. Within the "MEDITS 2013” project, Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split analyses the marine litter accumulated in the experimental trawler's catch ("Fishing for Litter") from 59 stations over the entire Croatian territorial waters. |

|
||||
Q7b - Description of monitoring of activities | It should be noted that, at the regional level sampling methodology and analysis of marine litter samples are underdeveloped and insufficiently comparable. When planned, monitoring program activities should follow the recommendations of the Working Group for GES (Working Group on Good Environmental Status, WG-GES, 2013). The bulk of the data collected in the Mediterranean refers to small areas, research action is mainly carried out by NGO-s and individuals without clearly defined objectives and related indicators. For all these reasons it is clearly need to establish a systematic investigation of marine litter. In Republic of Croatia, currently there is no systematic collection and data recording related to marine litter, and there is no strategic document/act which relates only to the issue of litter. Within the project "Consulting services in defining system for monitoring the continuing assessment of the Adriatic Sea - Adriatic Monitoring Program - Phase II", the investigation of marine litter in a trawler's fishing catches started. |
