Member state marine waters
The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Bulgaria extends beyond the territorial sea to 200 nautical miles (nm) from the baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. The territorial sea of the Republic of Bulgaria includes adjacent to the coast and inland marine waters strip, 12 nautical miles wide, as measured from the baselines. The continental shelf of the Republic of Bulgaria comprises the seabed and subsoil of the submarine area that are a natural extension of its land area and extends beyond the territorial sea to the limits of the continental shelf to the other adjacent and opposite states. Coastal waters are shallow waters located seaward from the coastal line every point of which is at a distance of one nautical mile on the inside the sea from the nearest point of the baseline from which the extent of the territorial sea is measured and, where appropriate, up to the outer limit of transitional waters.

MRUs description (AreaType)
The pelagic zone is subdivided into coastal (0-30 m below sea level), shelf (30-200 m BSL) and open sea (>200 m BSL) initial assessment areas, based on satellite derived the Chlorophyll a concentrations and review of the existing data/literature, showing correspondence with the previous zonation based on anthropogenic pressure, sea currents, productivity and bathymetry. The benthic zone is divided into 10 assessment areas based on the substrate characteristics and associated communities. There are 5 benthic assessment areas identified within the coastal zone (c. Sivriburun-c. Kaliakra, c. Kaliakra-c. Galata, c. Galata-c. Emine, c. Emine-Sozopol, Sozopol-Rezovo River), 3 within the continental shelf (northern, central and southern), and 1 in the open sea - outer shelf area. In some parts of the report, the assessment are employed for the pelagic waters, BLK-BG-AA-Coastal and BLK-BG-AA-Shelf, are sometimes used in realtion to the benthic habitats, where there is no enough information in the Initial assessment for every assessment area because of insufficient data and knowledge and to avoid the generation of excess or incorrect data.
