In areas where the length of the coastline is small compared to the sea area the recreational catch is small compared to the commercial catch. In areas such as the Oeresund where the coastline is long compared to the total sea area, the recreational catch is more important. Cod, flounder, eel and sea trout are the most important species in recreational fishery.
Not included in initial assessment. Shellfisheries are included in the WFD, as it is regarded part of benthic fauna.
Preliminary conclusions from the HARMONY project ranks bottom trawling as the 4th most important impact after impacts from hazardous substances, fishing of target species and nutrients. The pressure from vessels >15m is present in almost 100% of the North Sea and Skagerrak and in around 50% of Kattegat. There is no data available on pressures and impacts from vessels <15m. It is estimated that there is a substantial bottom trawling effort from vessels <15m in Kattegat and Limfjorden and often in shallower areas where vessels >15m are less common. Deeper parts of the seabed (soft bottom habitats) are strongly affected by bottom trawling for nephros. The northern part of the Øresund has had a ban on bottom trawling since 1934. These assessments are based on data from fishing vessels >15 m. No data is available for vessels <15 m.
Bycatch data of harbour porpoise in the North Sea in the period 1987-2001 show that the bycatch has decreased in the period 1994-2001 from over 7000 individualt to approximately 3500 in 2001. Data has not been collected since 2001. Bycatch of seabirds has been investigated in the period 2001-2004 but only in an area in the inner Danish waters (see Baltic Sea reporting). A pilot project in the North Sea, Skagerrak and the Oeresund including 6 vessels has shown that 5 vessels have very limited bycatch of seabirds and only guillimots, while the 6th vessel had a higher bycatch in the northern part of Oeresund of mainly guillimots and some cormorants.
In both the North Sea/Skagerrak and in Kattegat Gadus morhua, Pollachius virens and Anguilla anguilla are fished below Bpa or MSY B trigger, whereas Clupea harengus, Trisopterus esmarki and Melanogrammus aeglefinus are fished above Bpa or MSY B trigger. In the North Sea/Skagerrak Ammodytes marinus, Scomber scombrus and Pleuronectes platessa are fished above Bpa or MSY B trigger, and Squalus acanthias is fished above Bpa or MSY B trigger. These four species are either not assessed, not present or not defined in relation to Bpa or MSY B trigger in Kattegat. Solea solea is fished above Bpa or MSY B trigger in the North Sea/Skagerrak and below Bpa or MSY B trigger in Kattegat. Sprattus sprattus is not assessed in relation to Bpa or MSY B trigger. In general the biomass of Limanda limanda (2007-2009) and Platichthys flesus (2008-2010) is increasing and Psetta maxima has stable biomass in the North Sea/Skagerrak (2007-2009).
Impacts on mussels are not included in initial assessment. Shellfisheries are included in the WFD, as it is regarded part of benthic fauna. Nephrops norwegicus is and important commercial species in Kattegat and North Sea/Skagerrak. Landings have been stable around 4220 tn in the period 2006-2010 but are lower by 600 tn compared to the period 2001-2005. The discard of both small nephros (<50mm), gadus and other species including benthic fauna is high in this type of fishery. There are no available stock assessments of Homarus gammarus.

Information gaps
Info gaps are being assessed. Both extending geographical coverage and investigating specific topics or species are being considered. Topics being investigated or under consideration include effects of bottom trawling, commercial fish stocks, non-commercial fish stocks, bycatch evaluation of a number of species including surveys based on on board camera surveillance.
