Vessels >15 m based on VMH points where fishing is assumed based on vessel motorpower i kW. See figure 3.19 i DK-initial assessment. |

In areas where the length of the coastline is small compared to the sea area the recreational catch is small compared to the commercial catch. In areas such as the Oeresund where the coastline is long compared to the total sea area, the recreational catch is more important. Cod, flounder, eel and sea trout are the most important species in recreational fishery. |
Not included in initial assessment. Shellfisheries are included in the WFD, as it is regarded part of benthic fauna. |
The HELCOM Holas Status report 2010 has a general conclusion that bottom trawling, besides impacts from nutrients, constitutes the main impact in the Danish Belt Sea as well as in the waters of the western baltic Sea and the Waters around Bornholm. The northern part of the Øresund has had a ban on bottom trawling since 1934. These assessments are based on data from fishing vessels >15 m. No data is available for vessels <15 m. |
Only a limited amount of data has been collected regarding bycatch of harbour porpoise in the inner Danish Waters and the Danish Baltic Sea. The reason for this was that vessels were too small for observers to be onboard and because focus was on descard in the North Sea.
Bycatch of seabirds has been investigated in the period 2001-2004. The most common type of seabird in bycatch in the inner Danish waters is the Common Eider, making up 598 (71%) of the total calculated bycatch of 841 birds. The bycatch of Common Eider corresponds to 0,4% of the population in the investigated area. A bycatch of 63 long.tailed duck corresponds to 0,7% of the population in the area. |
In the western Baltic Sea - Danish Belt Sea Gadus morhua and Sprattus sprattus are fished above Bpa or MSY B trigger. Clupea harengus and Anguilla anguilla are fished below Bpa or MSY B trigger. Other species are either not assessed or not defined i relation to Bpa or MSY B trigger.
In the Eastern (Danish) Baltic Sea (the waters around Bornholm) only Sprattus sprattus is fished above Bpa or MSY B trigger. Anguilla anguilla is fished below Bpa or MSY B trigger. Clupea harengus has stable but low biomass. Gadus morhua is above possible reference points. Other species in this area are either not assessed or not defined i relation to Bpa or MSY B trigger.
In general the biomass of Limanda limanda is increasing and Psetta maxima has stable biomass in all Danish Baltic Sea waters (2009-2011). |
Impacts on mussels are not included in initial assessment. Shellfisheries are included in the WFD, as it is regarded part of benthic fauna.
Nephrops norwegicus is only fished in small amounts in the Danish parts of the Baltic Sea region. There are no available stock assessments of Homarus gammarus. |

Information gaps |
Info gaps are being assessed. Both extending geographical coverage and investigating specific topics or species are being considered. Topics being investigated or under consideration include effects of bottom trawling, commercial fish stocks, non-commercial fish stocks, bycatch evaluation of a number of species including surveys based on on board camera surveillance. |
