Description |
There are no monitroring data on underwater noise covering relevant spatial and temportal scales. A study at one sampling station near mMount Athos showed that most sources of noise where close to the background but this site is far from being representative of the Aegean. |

Frantzis (1998) showed there is a positive correlation between the frequency of use of sonars by the Navy and the stranding of dolphins in the Aegean. In the literature there are concerns regarding the effects of underwater noise and its impact on marine mamals making them unable to locate their prey or to avoid their predators |

Description (activities) |
Boats and shipping, illegal use of explosives, sonar and equipment for seismic and oil surveys contribute to underwater noise. No data available on the frequencies used and the effect on marine organisms. |
