Description (activities) |
Given that information with respect to generation of underwater noise from the various maritime activities is lacking, activities contributing to this pressure in Malta can only be presumed. Based on the potential for different types of maritime activities to generate impulsive underwater noise, it is presumed that seismic surveys in connection with oil exploration currently constitutes an important source of impulsive sounds; while shipping constitutes the main source of continuous underwater noise. |

Information gaps |
Data on underwater noise is lacking, therefore there is no knowledge of the extent to which the marine environment is being exposed to this pressure. For impulsive sounds, this data gap could be addressed in the future through streamlining of MSFD requirements in permitting or licensing procedures; while for ambient noise levels, specific monitoring regimes should be set up. |
