Member state marine waters
Sweden's sea area has been defined as the water between coastlines for the mainland and islands in the sea as well as the outer border of the continental shelf in accordance with the Act (2017: 1272) on Sweden's maritime territory and maritime zones. Coastlines are retrieved from the map database SVAR, Swedish Water Archive, SMHI. The coastlines are originally from Lantmäteriet's overview map in scale 1: 250,000, but they have been adapted to catchment areas in SVAR. Areas for 'seabed and subsoil' are the same as for water.
Region / subregion description
Boundaries for the Baltic Sea region and the North Sea subregion comply with the boundaries set out in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC). The border between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea has been agreed between Sweden and Denmark. A decision in this case (record number 783-12) was made by the Swedish Maritime Administration on 12 July 2012. The border is located in the Sound along the Öresund Bridge. The border has been chosen because it naturally separates the North Sea and the Baltic Sea from each other with regard to most physical and ecological factors.
Subdivisions
Sweden does not have sub-areas, but the 12 basins follow these principles.
MRUs description (AreaType)
Assessment areas have been developed at different levels; coastal water types, lake waters, basins, groups of basins and management area to be able to report different parts on different geographical scale. The basis for the division is the 12 basins (three in the North Sea sub-region and 9 in the Baltic Sea region). The division into sea basins is based on the division made in the Swedish Sea Area Register, which is part of the Swedish Water Archive (SVAR). If necessary, these basins are divided into coastal waters and offshore waters. Offshore waters always follow the division into basins and are defined by the coastal water boundary lines and the outer boundary line for the Swedish economic zone and follow the division into sea basins. Coastal waters are divided into coastal water types and follow the division of coastal waters according to the Swedish Maritime Administration's regulations on mapping and analysis of surface waters HVMFS 2017: 20 according to Regulation 2004: 660 on the management of the quality of the aquatic environment. In some cases, groups of pools are used as an assessment area. Pool groups have been defined as several pools within a larger sea area. Within the Swedish sea area, there are three pool groups, one in the North Sea and two in the Baltic Sea. All these assessment areas, except groups of basins, are on maps in Appendix 1 of the Swedish Maritime Administration's regulations on what characterizes good environmental status and environmental quality standards with indicators for the North Sea and the Baltic Sea (HVMFS 2012: 18).

Sweden's sea area has been defined as the water between the coastline and the outer border of the Swedish economic zone, EEZ. The coastline is from the map database SVAR, Swedish Water Archive; where it was originally taken from Lantmäteriet's overview map in scale 1: 25000, in 2007 the coastline and catchment areas in SVAR were adapted. EEZ has been retrieved from HELCOM's map data. Areas for 'seabed and subsoil' are the same as for water. In Sweden, an investigation is currently underway by the Swedish Maritime Administration to clarify the demarcation of the baseline. The results of this investigation may in some areas affect the EEZ. While the investigation is ongoing, Sweden refers to HELCOM's map data.

The division into sea basins is based on the division made in SVAR. Pool groups have been defined as several basins within a larger sea area.

Art. 8 nature of coordination
Coordination has taken place in two ways. Partly through work within HELCOM and OSPAR and partly through trilateral coordinations for the Baltic Sea and the North Sea respectively. For the North Sea, Sweden has had meetings with Denmark (DK) and Norway (NO). For the Baltic Sea, meetings have been held with Finland (FI) and Estonia (EE). Sweden has also invited other countries to respond to the consultation Good Marine Environment 2020 and the regulation HVMFS 2012: 18. With regard to socio-economic analysis, Sweden has had a special meeting with Denmark. Sweden is also a driving force (in the steering group) for ICG-SEA's project on reginal analysis of the implementation of ESA in the OSPAR area. With regard to the Baltic Sea area, Sweden is part of the steering group for GES-REG, which is a project with the aim of mapping how implementation has taken place in the area. Within HELCOM, Sweden has participated in HELCOM's coordination group JAB for MSFD and answered questionnaires about the progress of the work. Correspondingly, Sweden has participated in OSPAR's working group ICG-MSFD and answered their questionnaires. Participation in the meetings organized by the Commission has also led to the exchange of experience. For more details on the coordination within OSPAR and HELCOM, respectively, please refer to the reports "Baltic Sea Roof Report" and "Finding common ground".
Art. 8 regional coherence
Partial
Art. 8 regional coherence problems
Above all, there has been a lack of time to implement regional coordination in a consistent manner. In the region, the work has also been out of phase between the countries, which has also complicated coordination. Sweden has prioritized the countries where cooperation is considered most central to achieving coherence.

For the North Sea, Sweden has had meetings with Denmark (DK) and Norway (NO). For the Baltic Sea, meetings have been held with Finland (FI) and Estonia (EE). Sweden has also invited corresponding (all) countries and to answer the consultation Good Marine Environment 2020 and the regulation HVMFS 2012: 18. Within HELCOM, Sweden has participated in HELCOM's coordination group JAB for MSFD and answered questionnaires about the progress of the work. Within HELCOM, Sweden has participated in working groups that have developed common criteria and indicators and goals within the CORESET project. Correspondingly, Sweden has participated in OSPAR's working group ICG-MSFD and answered their questionnaires, as well as participated in the exchange of experience on criteria, indicators and goals. Within HELCOM, Sweden has participated in HELCOM's coordination group JAB for MSFD and answered questionnaires about the progress of the work. Correspondingly, Sweden has participated in OSPAR's working group ICG-MSFD and answered their questionnaires. Through valuable participation in the meetings organized by the Commission, a valuable exchange of experience has also taken place.
