GES description D1 Biodiversity
Biological diversity is maintained. The quality and occurrence of habitats and the distribution and abundance of species are in line with prevailing physiographic, geographic and climatic conditions
Existing descriptions shall be used for the definition of good biodiversity status under the MSFD. It can therefore be said that good environmental status for D1 is defined inter alia by the fact that... the internal and external coastal waters are in good ecological status in accordance with the WFD and the entire territorial sea area is in good chemical status... the habitat types of Annex I (LRT 11xx) of the Habitats Directive relevant to the marine area of the Baltic Sea are in a favourable conservation status. ... the species listed in Annex II to the Habitats Directive relevant to the marine area of the Baltic Sea and the species of the Birds Directive relevant to the marine area of the Baltic Sea are in a favourable conservation status.... the objectives of individual species or species group-specific conventions (e.g. ASCOBANS, Jastarnia Plan) have been achieved... The biodiversity according to HELCOM BSAP is in a good state. The pressures and effects specified in the reporting sheet (see list of physical/chemical features, habitats, functional groups, pressures) are understood as having an impact on the GES of the descriptor. The list has been completed accordingly.

Biological diversity is maintained. The quality and occurrence of habitats and the distribution and abundance of species are in line with prevailing physiographic, geographic and climate conditions.
GES description D1C1 Mortality rate from incidental by-catch
GES description D1C2 Population abundance (1.2, 1.2.1)
Hibernation and waterbird abundance

The range of species that make up habitats (biotopes) corresponds to their historical range of distribution and populations are vibrant
abundance is not smaller than treshold
The natural distributional range of the species is not declining and there is no risk that it will decline within the foreseeable future (Criterion D1.2.1).

1.2 The population sizes of mammals, birds, and fish do not deviate from the natural fluctuations of the population.
GES description D1C3 Population demographic characteristics (1.3, 1.3.1)
Number of species at favourable conservation status under the Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive

Species populations are vibrant and marine areas and their use will not endanger the long-term conservation of populations and communities in the long term.
Population indeks is above treshold
The population's structure and health status can safeguard reproduction and genetic variation to such an extent that the viability of the population can be maintained (Criteria D1.3.1 and D1.3.2).

1.3 The populations of mammals, birds, and fish have a health condition that guarantees their reproduction and long-term survival.
GES description D1C4 Population distributional range and pattern (1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3)
Distribution of breeding populations of aquatic birds (fish and shellfish)

Hibernation and waterbird distribution

Range of seal distribution

The distribution of species is consistent with their area of natural occurrence and the state of their sea space and their use do not endanger the long-term conservation of the species in the long term.
Distribution is not smaller than 50 % deviation of reference conditions
Developments in the porpoise population follow a level which safeguards long-term species abundance and maintenance of the full reproductive capacity of the species (Criteria D1.1.1, D1.1.2 and D1.1.3).
1.1B Utbredning av sälar
GES saknas.

1.1 The distribution of species is in line with prevailing geomorphological, geographical, and climatic conditions. Distribution areas previously changed, owing to human activities, are restored to a long-term sustainable level.
GES description D1C5 Habitat for the species
GES description D1C6 Pelagic habitat condition (1.5.2, 1.6, 1.6.1, 1.6.2, 1.6.3)

Occurrence and abundance of juvenile whitefish and flounder on shallow sandy bottoms

Status of species and communities typical of habitats
Realtive abundance of Fucus vesiculosus is above sertain treshold value
Fish Community Diversity Index (Shannon Index)
The physical, hydrological and chemical conditions support the functionality of the habitat (Criteria D1.6.1, D1.6.2 and D1.6.3).
