GES description | D1 Biodiversity | Distribution, size and condition of the predominant types of seabed habitats and diversity of associated species and communities correspond to the natural physical geography and climate, taking into account the sustainable use of the marine environment and climate change. Natural range and surface area of the predominant habitats and associated typical species do not decrease significantly and are unlikely to decrease in the future. The specific ecological conditions necessary for long-term conservation of the typical species and biological communities will continue to exist in the future. The extent and condition of habitats on the seabed support the functioning of the natural ecosystem processes, providing ecosystem goods and services such as food production, maintenance of the quality of the seawater, opportunities for recreation and tourism. |
|
D1C1 Mortality rate from incidental by-catch
D1C2 Population abundance (1.2, 1.2.1) | For high ecological status the EEI (Ecological Evalution Index) index takes values between 8 and 10; for good ecological status the EI index takes values between 6 and 8; for moderate ecological status the EI index takes values from 4 to 6; for poor ecological status the EI index takes values from 2 to 4 and for bad ecological status the index takes values from 0 to 2. GES could be defined by the population of the Phocena phocoena attaining densities larger that the present registeres ones. |
||
D1C3 Population demographic characteristics (1.3, 1.3.1)
D1C4 Population distributional range and pattern (1.1, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3) | Fish: the range of the distribution of fish populations did not change; Mammals: the range of the distribution of marine mammals does not change |

D1C5 Habitat for the species
D1C6 Pelagic habitat condition (1.5.2, 1.6, 1.6.1, 1.6.2, 1.6.3) | Fish: the diversity in the structure of the fish communities is maintained at a high level Mesozooplankton biomass, open sea, 1966-2009 Phytoplankton biomass, coastal, spring, 2006-2011 Phytoplankton biomass, shelf, spring, 2006-2011 |
1.6.1. GES is defined by the population of the characteristic species- the bivalve Donacilla cornea- attaining densities equal or larger than the threshold |
