GES description D10 Litter
Good environmental status is achieved when marine litter and its decomposition products do not cause or no longer cause significant impacts noted below in order of importance: 1) The litter and its degradation products present and entering the marine sub-region are significantly reduced over time and do not pose a significant risk to marine life at the population level, either a risk of direct mortality or a risk of indirect impacts such as reduced fecundity or mobility, or bioaccumulation in trophic chains. 2) Wastes and their degradation products present and entering the marine sub-region are not a significant vector for the introduction of invasive species. 3) Marine litter present and entering the Marine Sub-region does not pose a direct or indirect risk to human health. (4) The waste and its degradation products present and entering the waters of the Marine Sub-region do not cause significant adverse economic impacts on marine activities, industries and coastal communities. (5) Wastes at sea do not pose an unacceptable risk to navigation.
To achieve Good Environmental Status according to descriptor 10 it is desirable to reduce the quantities of marine litter in coastal and marine environment to such an extent that they do not harm the environment and the organisms living in or depending on it.
For descriptor 10, GES is approached qualitatively as it is impossible to establish threshold values for the quantities or properties of marine litter.

According to initial assessment marine litter constitutes a crucial issue for the subregion, although it is impossible to determine the level of disturbance. The incoherence of available data from surveys and cleanup campaigns as well as the inadequacy of information – e.g. there are gaps about the state of the deep sea - cannot provide a thorough insight into the existing status of litter in the marine and coastal environment.

The environmental status of the Ionian Sea to a proportion of 5 to 10 % is regarded as not good at coastal level, as significant amounts of litter reach the coastal and marine environment from various land based and sea based sources (80% of the marine litter derives from land based sources). It is obvious that the assessment of GES is produced based on quality parameters taking into consideration the aesthetics degradation caused to the marine environment due to the presence of litter along with environmental, social and financial adverse impacts. In the long run it is desirable to have totally litter - free coasts and seas. However, by 2020 it is aimed to have achieved a dramatic reduction in the amounts of litter.
GES description D10C1 Litter (excluding micro-litter) (10.1, 10.1.1, 10.1.2)
At this time there are not data available in all the Mediterranean basin, to determine a specific GES for Trends in the amount, distribution and, where possible, composition of micro-particles Knowledge on microplastic nature and harmful in marine environment it is not developed enough. Considering that plastic production is increasing yearly and the low time of decomposition of plastic materials in the environment, microplastic amount probably will increase in the future. Furthermore the minimum size of microlitter taken into account, influences the hypothetical threshold value. Research programs need to be developed

The condition of GES achievable is defined only as one in which the waste decreases to a fraction of those initially recorded, in consequence to an increase of the collecting activity and the decrease of the contributions, reaching a value that does not cause adverse consequences for the marine environment and human activities.
GES description D10C2 Micro-litter (10.1, 10.1.3)

GES description D10C4 Adverse effects of litter (10.2)
At this time there are not data available in all the Mediterranean basin, to elaborate GES for Trends in the amount and composition of litter ingested by marine animals Data used from OSPAR Countries on Fulmarus glacialis are not applicable, considering that fulmar does not live at Mediterranean area. Italy is carrying out an experimental monitoring plan with the aim to develop a common protocol on ingested litter by sea turtles Caretta caretta (stomach analysis, and fecal pellet). The guide line “litter & biota” produced during the activity on sampled sea turtles in 2012, must be enforced and put in practice in each assessment areas. The threshold value could be detected only after seasonal monitoring programs for different year
