GES description D6 Sea-floor integrity/D1 Benthic habitats
Le bon état écologique est atteint lorsque les conditions ci-après sont cumulativement respectées :

- le taux d’emprise et l’intensité des pressions physiques exercées sur le fond ne dépassent pas les niveaux présentés à l’annexe 2 de l'arrêté du 17 décembre 2012 relatif à la définition du bon état écologique des eaux marines ;
- les pressions physiques exercées sur le fond n’engendrent pas d’impacts significatifs sur la richesse spécifique, l’abondance et la biomasse des espèces ingénieures, porteuses de biodiversité, identifiées par les descripteurs 1 (biodiversité) et 4 (réseau trophique marin) ;
- les pressions physiques exercées sur le fond n’engendrent pas d’impacts significatifs sur l’état de la communauté benthique.
To achieve GES:
Opportunistic species in benthic communities should not exceed levels of abundance that indicate unacceptable ecological quality.
Multimetric indices assessing environmental quality should be kept at levels indicating high or good ecological quality.
The marine environment of Cyprus is considered to be in good environmental status by the year 2020 if the structure and function of the ecosystem are safeguarded and not adversely affected. Specifically, diversity and productivity are maintained, and any pressures do not hinder the ecosystem components to recover and/or retain their natural diversity, productivity and dynamic ecological processes. Given the available data, the determination of the GES of this descriptor relies heavily on criterion 6.2, which in turn is based on indicator 6.2.2. Indicator 6.2.2 is calculated using the various multimetric indices that have been developed in the framework of the Water-Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) for angiosperms, macroalgae and macrobenthos (and presently assigned a value of 0.9875).
GES description D6C1 Physical loss of the seabed (6.1)
GES is characterized by the absence of significant abrasion determined by benthic impacting fishing gears (otter trawl, rapido trawl and hydraulic dredge) and sealing (determined by coastal defence structures, offshore structures, pipes, etc.) on biogenic substrates.
The “biogenic substrate” include the following habitats: Posidonia oceanica meadows, Maerl beds, Coralligenous biocoenosis (reef) and deep corals.

In particular, on biogenic substrates:
- pressure determined by benthic impacting fishing gears is always significant and it must be absent (0 % of presence), i.e. below a limit related to uncertainty (10%*) in the pressure assessment method.
- pressure determined by sealing is always significant and it must be absent, except when it is allowed by current laws.
On the other types of substrates “not biogenic” (sand, mud, mixed sediment, etc.):
- pressure determined by benthic impacting fishing gears (otter trawl, rapido trawl and hydraulic dredge) is significant when the area covered by the pressure is higher than a % of maximum acceptable surface (taking into account a specific temporal unit) to be determined by 2018.
- pressure determined by sealing does not contribute to determine GES.

* the current estimate of the error could be re-assessed.

Good ecological status is achieved when the spatial distributions of naturally occurring habitats are adapted to existing natural environmental conditions and when spatial and functional connectivity is maintained, especially for species habitats.
The Good Environmental Status can be considered as “maintained and/or achieved” when the natural habitat occurrence and the covered surface are stable or increasing. This condition is evaluated respecting the habitat extent for the Maerl and Rhodolites beds and respecting both habitat extent and upper/lower limit variation for the Posidonia oceanica. When the total contribution of the impacts occurring over the habitats cause a strong and long-term alteration of key parameters (natural distribution; structure and functions) the variation have to be considered as “relevant”. In this case the modification of the natural condition will be not in line with the maintenance/achieving of GES.

Good ecological status is achieved when the quality of basic habitats, described by biotic (such as the specific composition and abundance of the naturally associated biological community) and abiotic (structural and environmental conditions) parameters, is at a sufficient level to ensure the integrity of naturally associated ecological functions.
As far as concern demersal elasmobranches the indicator 1.6.2 is implemented by the abundance (number) and biomass (weight) of piscivorous species (Troph. Lev. ≥ 4,0). The achievement of GES is obtained when temporal trends in abundance and biomass of demersal piscivorous elasmobranches are constant or significatively increasing (β≥0, p<0.05).

GES is achieved when values of species diversity (the Shannon-Wiener index, H’) in the assessment area is equal to or exceed the threshold value (quantitatively expressed)

Good Environmental Status respect to the indicator 1.6.1 is maintained and/or reached when the presence, the composition and the vitality of habitat builder species are stable or not significantly altered due to anthropic actions from the fixed baseline

The GES condition for demersal elasmobranches is achieved when temporal trend of specific diversity (Shannon-Wiener Index, H’) is constant or significantly increasing in the assesment area.

The Good Environmental Status with respect to the Indicator 1.6.2. is considered maintained or achieved when the relative abundance of the plankton communities compatible with the natural conditions, or presents a slight deviation from these conditions.
Morsko dno je v dobrem stanju, kadar je na ravni, ki zagotavlja zaščito naravne strukture, obsega, razporeditve in funkcij ekosistema ter kadar ni dolgoročnih škodljivih vplivov na bentoške združbe.
