GES description D5 Eutrophication
Good Environmental Status in relation to descriptor 5 is achieved when the human-induced eutrophication is minimised, especially the adverse effect thereof, such as losses in biodiversity, ecosystem degradation, harmful algal blooms and oxygen deficiency in bottom waters. GES is assessed with Black Sea Eutrophication assessment Tool (BEAST)
GES description D5C1 Nutrient concentrations (5.1, 5.1.1)
Nutrient concentrations are not at levels that indicate adverse eutrophication effects.

Water column nutrients concentrations are not at levels
that indicate adverse eutrophication effects.
Nutrient concentrations do not lead to an undesirable disturbance to the balance of organisms present in the water or to the quality of the water concerned resulting from accelerated growth of algae, and are below the threshold values
GES description D5C2 Chlorophyll-a concentration (5.2.1)
Chlorophyll a concentrations are not at
levels that indicate adverse effects of nutrient enrichment.

The chlorophyll "a" concentration in the water column does not exceed levels indicative of human-induced nutrient enrichment which can cause an adverse effect on bottom vegetation.
The direct effects of nutrient enrichment associated with phytoplankton growth do not constitute or contribute to an undesirable disturbance to the balance of organisms present in the water and to the quality of the water concerned, by meeting the threshold values. Chlorophyll a concentrations are below the thresholds
GES description D5C3 Harmful algal blooms (5.2.4)
The number, spatial extent and duration of harmful algal bloom events are not at levels that indicate adverse effects of nutrient enrichment. The threshold values were established through regional or subregional cooperation.
The magnitude of harmful algal bloom
events (Noctiluca scintillans biomass) are not at levels that indicate adverse effects of nutrient enrichment and below the threshold values.
GES description D5C4 Photic limit (5.2.2)
The photic limit (annual average transparency or PAR) of the water column is not reduced, due to an increase in phytoplankton abundance to a level that indicates adverse effects of nutrient enrichment on the bottom vegetation.

The photic limit (transparency) of the water column is not reduced, due to increases in suspended algae, to a level that indicates adverse effects of nutrient enrichment.
The photic limit (transparency) of the water column is not reduced, due to increases in suspended algae, to a level that indicates adverse effects of nutrient enrichment and is higher than the threshold values.
GES description D5C5 Dissolved oxygen concentration (5.3.2)
The concentration of dissolved oxygen is not reduced, due to nutrient enrichment, to levels that indicate adverse effects on benthic habitats (including on associated biota and mobile species) or other eutrophication effects.
The concentration of bottom dissolved oxygen is not reduced, in the warm season, due to nutrient enrichment, to levels that indicate adverse effects on benthic habitat, above the threshold values.
GES description D5C6 Opportunistic macroalgae of benthic habitats (5.2.3)
The abundance of opportunistic macroalgae is not at levels that indicate adverse effects of nutrient enrichment.
The biomass of opportunistic macroalgae (ESGII =opportunistic/total biomass, %) is not at levels that indicate adverse effects of nutrient enrichment and below the threshold values.
GES description D5C7 Macrophyte communities of benthic habitats (5.3.1)
The community-level indicators (e.g. species composition, relative abundance and/or biomass and/or spatial coverage etc.), population-level indicators and/or depth distribution of macrophyte communities achieve values that indicate there is no adverse effect due to nutrient enrichment including via a decrease in water transparency.
GES description D5C8 Macrofaunal communities of benthic habitats
The species composition and relative abundance of macrofaunal communities, achieve values that indicate that there is no adverse effect due to nutrient and organic enrichment and are above the threshold values.
GES description 5.1.2 Nutrient ratios (silica, nitrogen and phosphorus)
GES description 5.2 Direct effects of nutrient enrichment
GES description 5.3 Indirect effects of nutrient enrichment

Justification for non-use of criterion
D5C1: Currently, the criterion is by definition limited to only "water column" nutrients and is not applied within the seagrass habitats due to poor evidence for its relevance in these communities (e.g. Burkholder et al., 2007).
D5: D5C5
Justification for delay in setting EU/regional requirements
D5C2: Indicators thresholds need to be further adapted for seagrass and macroalgae habitats application.

D5C4: Currently not applied due to lack of year-round data for transparency and/or PAR (photosynthetically available radiation).
