The European Environment Agency (EEA) has developed a dynamic monitoring framework to track and assess the progress of the EU Mission activities in achieving objectives and targets of relevant EU policies. The indicators are developed in collaboration with the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries department of the European Commission (DG MARE) and is accompanied by Policy Briefs and Monitoring Assessments.
The monitoring framework includes quantitative and qualitative indicators that help track progress towards 10 targets across 3 objectives of the EU Mission Ocean and Waters. Additional information on the method and guiding principles of the monitoring framework can be found in the Policy Brief 1/2025: Monitoring of the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” (May 2025).
First monitoring assessment
The infographics below provides an overview of indicators developed to track progress towards 10 targets across 3 objectives of the EU Mission Ocean and Waters. The internal level shows the Objectives, the second level the Targets, while the external presents the Indicators. Click on the chart to access fact sheets for each indicator.
The first monitoring assessment includes both qualitative and quantitative assessment of the impact of the projects for each indicator. Indicators are populated with information on the expected outcomes of projects, as described in their technical annexes submitted during proposal phase. When available, existing indicators on the status of environment published by the EEA are used as a baseline to inform the assessment on the contribution of Mission’s projects.

Overview of Mission’s demo sites and associated regions
Mission's projects are testing innovation solutions and new technologies on a broad network of about 300 Mission's demo sites across EU Member States and Associated Countries for demonstration and real-time testing. In addition to demo sites, projects are planning to further demonstrate and replicate solutions in more than 130 sites through the Associated regions scheme. This scheme helps to raise awareness and boost capacity development in less-developed areas and/or allow to demonstrate solutions in similar or complementary conditions to the one experienced in demo sites.
The map below shows an overview of Mission's demo site and associated regions, whose locations have already been selected (Aug 2025). Additional information on each site is displayed when clicking on it.
