Stories

As the Foundation for Environmental Education in Türkiye, we are committed to enhancing the quality of coastal cleanup campaigns since March 2021. Our initiatives aim to raise awareness in accordance with Blue Flag criteria, as part of the Marine Litter Watch Project. We also work to increase awareness among municipalities and other stakeholders regarding marine litter and its impacts. By collecting reliable data on the state of marine litter along Türkiye's coastlines, we’re happy to contribute to the efforts of the European Environment Agency. Furthermore, the data we collect with citizens help beaches without the Blue Flag award in preparing for the award application process.
For over 45 years, Legambiente has been a non-profit association bringing together citizens committed to protecting the environment, quality of life, and a more equitable and inclusive society. Through volunteering and direct participation, it promotes change grounded in scientific environmentalism, collecting data that underpin advocacy, reports, and policy proposals. Legambiente works to counter the climate crisis, pollution, and environmental crime, in pursuit of beauty, fairness, and a better quality of life. Marine litter pollution is one of the key challenges we address. The European Environment Agency’s Marine Litter Watch project enables us to collaborate with like-minded organisations across Europe, pool efforts, and amplify the work carried out by thousands of citizens.

For more than three decades, Mare Nostrum NGO has been committed to safeguarding marine ecosystems, structuring its efforts around three strategic domains: biodiversity conservation, education for sustainable development, and resource management. While maintaining a comprehensive approach to sustainability, Mare Nostrum has distinguished itself as a regional pioneer in combating pollution, with a particular emphasis on marine litter.
Central to this effort is the use of the Marine Litter Watch, a tool that Mare Nostrum utilises to gather standardised data, bridging the gap between local community action and European policy-making. Through these monitoring programmes, combined with coastal clean-ups and advocacy, Mare Nostrum drives tangible change to reduce waste. By empowering communities and influencing decision-makers, the organisation ensures a cleaner, healthier future for the Black Sea.
